Slovenia is a young state, but has a richly filled history.

=> In the 6th century the south-Slav-Slovenian clan established himself of the Slovenes at the south east of the Alps. There they founded the kingdom Karantanië.

=> Halfway the 8th century the people came in Frankische hands, which was under control of Karel large. Afterwards they were governed by several kings. But it where the Habsburgers which could control them longest.

=> 1473: the Slovenes came in insurrection against German predominance. They wanted more autonomy.

=> 1551 : The first printed book that's made in Slovenia gets the title : "Katekizim" and is been written by Primož Trubar.

=> 1918: After the fall of the Habsburgse the Slovenes put the hands toghether with Croatia & Serbia. This way, they armed themselves, as 1 power, against military attacks.

=> 1929: From now of Slovenia, Croatia & Serbia exist as 1 country with the name Yugoslavia.

=> 1941: During 2nd the world war Yugoslavia is occupied by the Nazi's.

=> In 1945, the Croat, Tito, kept score in Yugoslavia by improving cooperation between the different parties.

=> Slovenia is the most prosperous republic, developed after a raw material poor period.

=> After Tito's dead in 1980, the Slovenes want Slovenia to be independent & autonomous exactly because they stood economically strong.

=> On 23/12/1990, Slovenia kept a referendum.96 % of the people did vote for an independent Slovenia.

=> In 1991, Slovenia becomes independent. This did not remain without impact. There was a 10 days during war with the Yugoslavian army arisen. They tried in vain the borders with Italy & wanted to keep Austria under Yugoslavian control.

=> In 1992, there followed the first parliamentary presidential elections. Milan Kucan came out as the new president.

=> 1996: Slovenia signs an agreement with the EU. The first step in the direction of the accession.

=> 1997: THE EU opens the door for the complete accession of Slovenia.

=> 1999: Slovenia gives authorisation to make their airspace available at bombarding Kosovo & Serbia.

=> 2002: THE EU countries, invites Slovenia officially to join in 2004.

=> On 22 December 2002 Janez Drnovsek became the new president of Slovenia.

=> 1 May 2004 the accession to the EU becomes a fact.

=> May 2006: THE EU gives permission to Slovenia so that they can join on 01/01/07, to the euro zone.

=> January 2007: Slovenië is the 13th country who becomes part of the Eurozone. On the coin of 2 euro you find the image of the poetrist France preseren & the coin of 50 cent shows the mount Triglav.

=>21 december 2007: Slovenia is now an official member of the Schengen area and there is no more surveillance on the borders.

=> 1 januari 2008 : Slovenia hold the presidency of the council of the European Union for the first six months of 2008.
